🌾 Jute Industry: Global Dominance, MSP of ₹5,925/Quintal & Jute Geotextiles (JGT)
- Global Production Leader: India leads global raw jute output (94.03 lakh bales in 2025–26) and produces ~75% of global jute goods, sustaining 40 lakh farm families and 3.7 lakh mill workers.
- MSP Fixed: MSP of raw jute for 2026–27 fixed at ₹5,925 per quintal, ensuring a 61.8% return over the weighted average cost of production.
- Mandatory Packaging: Under the Jute Packaging Materials (JPM) Act, 1987, 100% of food grains and 20% of sugar are mandatorily packed in diversified jute bags.
- High-Tech Diversification: Jute Geotextiles (JGT) for soil erosion control, ISRO's PATSAN/Bhuvan JUMP satellite crop surveillance, and Jute-viscose apparel showcased at Commonwealth Games 2026.
- Agro-Climatic Needs: Requires hot and humid climate (temperature 24°C–38°C), high relative humidity (70–90%), and rainfall of 1,200–1,500 mm. Thrives in well-drained alluvial soil in the floodplains of Ganges-Brahmaputra.
- Nodal Procurement Body: Jute Corporation of India (JCI) acts as the price support agency when market rates fall below MSP.
- Mesta: A complementary bast fibre crop grown in drier tracts as a cost-effective alternative to raw jute.
The Government has mandated 100% packaging of food grains and 20% of sugar in mandatory jute bags.
Jute is known as the Golden Fibre due to its natural golden hue, high tensile strength, and immense economic value in eastern India.
