Telegram Temporarily Banned in India — What NEET UG 2026 Aspirants Need to Know Right Now

📅 June 16, 2026 🕐 5 min read 👤 Education & Tech
If Telegram suddenly stopped working on your phone today, you are not alone — and it is not a network glitch. The Indian government has officially blocked Telegram across the country until 22 June 2026, specifically due to widespread fraud targeting NEET UG 2026 candidates.

Why Is Telegram Banned in India Right Now?

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) invoked Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 to temporarily block Telegram access in India. The order came on the recommendation of the National Testing Agency (NTA), ahead of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination scheduled for 21 June 2026.

Fraudsters were running Telegram channels openly — with names like "PAPER LEAKED NEET," "Re-NEET 2026," and "Private Mafia" — charging desperate students anywhere from a few thousand to several lakh rupees for supposed access to the question paper.

What Happened? A Full Timeline

Weeks before the exam

Telegram channels started soliciting NEET aspirants, demanding money for "leaked" papers. Bihar Police issued a public advisory on 9 June warning candidates not to fall for such offers.

Channel-level takedowns (I4C)

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under MHA attempted targeted channel removals. However, Telegram failed to comply adequately at the platform level.

Ahmedabad arrest

The City Cyber Crime Branch arrested members of an inter-state gang running 8 Telegram fraud channels, linked to approximately ₹1.5 crore in documented transactions. Around 1,000 mobile numbers were contacted in just one month.

June 16, 2026 — Today

MeitY officially blocks Telegram access across India under Section 69A of the IT Act. A second order also requires Telegram to disable its message-editing feature until 30 June 2026.

21 June 2026

NEET UG 2026 re-examination takes place across India.

22 June 2026

Telegram access ban is lifted. The message-editing restriction continues until 30 June 2026.

Why Is the Message-Editing Feature Also Disabled?

This is a specific and technical measure. Telegram allows channel admins to edit an old message — including swapping out attached PDFs — while retaining the original timestamp. Fraudsters exploited this to fabricate "evidence" of a paper leak.

The trick was simple: post something harmless before the exam, then edit it after to insert the real question paper. This made the post appear as though the paper had been circulating in advance. The resulting screenshots were shared widely as fake "proof" of a leak.

By disabling this feature in India until 30 June 2026, MeitY closes this loophole entirely. Regular message sending and receiving is not affected by this second order.

What NEET UG 2026 Aspirants Should Do Right Now

🏫 If you are appearing for NEET UG 2026 — read this carefully

The NTA has been very clear: no examination paper is available outside the secured examination chain. Every single "leaked paper" offer you saw on Telegram was a scam designed to steal your money. Here is what you should do:

  • Do not pay anyone claiming to have the paper — you will lose money and risk your candidacy
  • Use this time (while Telegram is down) to revise with books, PDFs, and YouTube videos
  • Switch to WhatsApp groups, Discord servers, or NTA's official website for updates
  • Report any fraud attempts to the National Cyber-Crime Helpline: 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in
  • Carry your admit card, a valid photo ID, and passport-size photos on exam day
  • Check nta.ac.in regularly for any official announcements

Red Flags — Scam Warning Signs to Watch Out For

  • Anyone asking for money for "guaranteed" paper access before the exam
  • Channels claiming to have "edited original timestamps" as proof of a leak
  • Screenshots of supposed leaked papers shared widely on WhatsApp or Telegram
  • Unknown numbers calling or messaging you about NEET papers or seat arrangements

What Can You Use Instead of Telegram Right Now?

  • WhatsApp groups — Most coaching institutes have already migrated study materials here
  • YouTube — Last-minute revision lectures, previous year paper solutions, and topic summaries
  • NTA official website (nta.ac.in) — Admit card downloads, exam day guidelines, and official announcements
  • Discord — Many active NEET communities with notes, doubt-solving, and peer support
  • Coaching app / LMS — If you are enrolled with Allen, Aakash, Unacademy etc., use their dedicated apps
  • Signal — A privacy-focused alternative messaging app that is not currently blocked

When Will Telegram Be Unblocked in India?

Telegram access will be fully restored on 22 June 2026 — one day after the NEET UG re-examination. However, the message-editing feature will remain disabled in India until 30 June 2026. Normal messaging, file sharing, and all other Telegram features will work fine once the access ban lifts on 22 June.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Indian government (MeitY) has temporarily blocked Telegram under Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000, due to widespread fraud targeting NEET UG 2026 candidates. Fraudsters were using Telegram channels to extort money from students by selling fake "leaked" question papers. The block is in effect until 22 June 2026.
No. The NTA has categorically stated that no examination paper is available outside the secured examination chain. All "leaked paper" offers on Telegram were fraudulent attempts to extort money from students and families. The screenshots shared as "evidence" were fabricated using Telegram's message-editing feature.
Telegram access will be restored on 22 June 2026, the day after the NEET UG re-examination. The message-editing feature restriction continues until 30 June 2026. All other Telegram features will work normally from 22 June onwards.
While VPNs may technically bypass the block, doing so during a government-mandated restriction could carry legal risks. We strongly advise using alternative platforms like WhatsApp, Discord, or YouTube for study needs during this short period. The ban lifts in just a few days.
Telegram allows admins to edit old messages while keeping the original timestamp. Fraudsters misused this by posting harmless content before the exam, then editing it after to add the real question paper — making it appear as though the paper was leaked in advance. MeitY has ordered this feature disabled in India until 30 June 2026 to prevent this type of fabrication.
Immediately report it to the National Cyber-Crime Helpline at 1930 or via cybercrime.gov.in. Do not pay any amount under any circumstances — every such offer is a scam. You can also report the incident to your nearest police cyber cell or contact NTA directly.
As of now, the NEET UG 2026 re-examination is scheduled for 21 June 2026 as planned. The Telegram ban is a precautionary security measure, not an indication of any problem with the exam itself. Always check nta.ac.in for official and verified updates.
WhatsApp, Discord, YouTube, and your coaching institute's dedicated app (Allen, Aakash, Unacademy, etc.) are all good alternatives. The NTA's official website (nta.ac.in) is the most reliable source for exam-related information. Signal is also available as a messaging alternative.
Telegram was blocked under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. This section empowers the central government to block public access to any information through any computer resource in the interest of sovereignty, integrity, security of India, or public order. MeitY acted on formal recommendations from the NTA.
